After studying the organ with Nicholas Danby at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Edward took up, and then relinquished, the organ scholarship at Keble College, Oxford, in October 1970.
He then started work with Grant, Degens and Bradbeer in Northampton (Martin had started a few weeks earlier) in January 1971.
He then moved to Gregor Hradetzky, Krems an der Donau, Austria in 1978 – 1979. This included a year in Sydney, Australia, flue voicing with Ron Sharp at the Sydney Opera House organ.
Then from 1979 – 1985, he was employed by Peter Collins at Redbourn, Hertfordshire. Notable organs during this time: St. Peter, Mancroft, Norwich, and St David’s Hall, Cardiff.
He then joined his old friends, Martin and Dominic, on their move to Welbeck in 1985. He became a director along with Martin and Dominic, and the three of them managed the business for nearly forty years.
In 1993 he married Tarja Reponen from Finland, and two children followed.
Edward is extremely knowledgeable, and whilst the other directors often concentrated on design and the history of the organs, Edward worked relentlessly in the workshop on every organ that came through the door. He has an all-round knowledge of every part of an organ and freely passed on his knowledge and skills with all the trainee organ builders that have passed through G&G. Edward is an excellent craftsman, and was responsible for overseeing the workshop and training new staff, alongside installations and tunings.
Edward retired on 18th August 2021, on his 73rd birthday, however he still calls in regularly, especially at coffee time. Edward has had fifty happy years organ building! He still has a love of organs and travel, and has even been over to Japan in 2023 to accompany some repaired pipes for us to an organ we made in 1993 (30 years previously)!
