Lectern at Monksilver

Near Nettlecombe is the lovely village church of Monksilver, with this unusual late mediaeval lectern, a wooden eagle, perhaps intended to take the King’s Great Bible in 1538 to be “set up in some convenient place … whereas your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same”, in this case attached to the rood screen. The great lectern which we made for John Harper is being filmed for a television history of choral evensong at the moment.
